Training

My Training Philosophy

I began training horses when I was 14 under the guidance of Sylvia Passow. Sylvia taught me how to read and communicate with horses. From her I also learned how to train on the trail and the importance of being confident to instill confidence in the horse. My  first paid horse related job was working at WinRidge Golden Gaits, a Saddlebred farm, where I  handled and trained young horses for Betty and Steve Halverson. From there I  went on to train horses for myself and other people. Mostly starting horses under saddle and working with horses who had behavioral issues. I took a break from training and working with other people's horses to start a family and focus more on my breeding program.  In 2013 I decided to go back to college. Initially I went back to get my RN, but ultimately decided that a career with horses is where my heart truly laid so I made the decision to pursue a degree in Equine Science with an emphasis on riding and training. The college program I attended gave me exposure to multiple disciplines that I previously had only read about and also taught me more refined skills! to better be able to finish horses and instruct others in their riding. I definitely feel that the program made  me a much more rounded horsewoman and am very glad that I made the decision to pursue it. As far as my methodology,  I  believe in a solid foundation teaching confidence and mutual respect built on trust and clear lines of communication that begin on the ground doing ordinary tasks and carrying those objectives through under saddle. I treat each horse as an individual. There is no cookie cutter approach or gimmicks in use here. Only good, patient, honest, common sense horsemanship that involves working with your horse from the ground up developing trust and clear lines of communication. I  teach horses to think and problem solve rather than react to their environment and give them a great foundation that will carry over into any discipline.
